Accelerated Reader Q &A

What is Accelerated Reader?

Accelerated reader is a computerized reading incentive program.

How does it work?

1. Students select and read a book that we have a computer quiz for.

2. Students take a short, multiple choice quiz about the book using the computer.

3. The computer records the quiz results and provides individualized and immediate feedback for the teacher, student, and parents (TOPS Report).

What are the AR quizzes like?

The quizzes are literal, multiple choice comprehension checks of the main ideas in a book. The quizzes are challenging and provide accountability. Students recieve instant results and reinforcement for their reading results. Incorrect responses are reviewed and a TOPS Report is printed out letting the teacher and parent know how the student did.

How can a student find an AR book?

Our school library has a large collection of AR books at a variety of reading levels that are clearly marked with AR stickers. The students are taught to look for these stickers in library class.

Is Accelerated Reader only for advanced students?

Not at all! This program's greatest benefit is that a teacher with a student who can read novels may also have a student struggling with easy picture books and both can be accomodated. Students should not have to consistently read material above their ability level. This leads to frustration and negative feelings toward reading and learning. Conversely, an advanced reader needs to be challenged with text material that is on-level for them. This program is able to fulfill the needs of both of these types of students.
