Pablo Neruda:  Poet (1904-1973)  Neftalí Reicardo Reyes Basoalto was born in Parral, Chile to a poor family.  He began to write poetry at age ten and later met Chilean Poet Gabriela Mistral.  Neftalí used a pen name, Pablo Neruda, because his family did not agree with his writing.  He published poems, studied French, edited a literary magazine, and served as a diplomat.  Pablo wrote poetry about politics, love, and social issues.  He won the Nobel Prized in literature in 1971.  Pablo is one of the most widely read Spanish poets.
