Benito Juarez: President of Mexico (1806-1872) Benito Juarez was born in Mexico. He studied law and governed Oaxaca state. Benito helped overthrow General Santa Anna and became a temporary president until rebels forced him to flee the capital. Benito continued to rule from another city and made changes in government and society. Benito was elected president of Mexico in 1861. When Mexico could not pay its debt to France, Mexico City was invaded and captured. Benito ruled from the north until the French were defeated. Benito Juarez is one of the Mexicos greatest national heroes.
