Alicia Alonso: Ballerina (b. 1921) Alicia Ernestina de la Hoya was born in Havana, Cuba. She studied in New York City at he School of American Ballet, danced in several musicals, and eventually formed a partnership with Igor Youskevitch. Alicia was partially blind so lights were placed in different parts of the stage to guide her steps. Alicia and Igor performed well, and audiences never observed her handicap.
